Canada Soccer announced Wednesday that Kenneth Heiner-Møller will step down from his role as women’s head coach.
Heiner-Møller took over the head coach role in January of 2018 from current men’s head coach John Herdman. In his short tenure at the helm the women’s national team went 20-10-5.
The outgoing coach will take over as the Head of Coach Education within the Danish Football Association.
“Canada Soccer wishes Mr. Heiner-Møller all the best in his return to the Danish Football Association and thank him for his contributions to our Women’s National Team Program,” said Steven Reed, Canada Soccer President in an announcement on the Canada Soccer website. “He is a highly-regarded coach who gained the respect of the Canadian soccer community in his time with our organization and we thank him for his genuine approach with both players and staff.”
Heiner-Møller will stay on until the end of August. In the meantime, the search for a new head coach has begun. Names like Rhian Wilkinson and Daniel Worthington have been thrown around. Wilkinson is currently the head coach of the women’s youth programs within Canada Soccer. Worthington has been part of the women’s national team program since 2010, holding multiple roles.
The Danish coach has agreed to help in the transition phase. He knows that the women’s program is filled with talent both on and off the field.
“This was not an easy decision to make because of the quality of the people that I have had the pleasure to work with since my time at Canada Soccer,” said Heiner-Møller. “As a leader in the women’s game, Canada Soccer’s investment in the Women’s National Team Program will ensure its continued success.
“I would like to thank the players, staff and Canada Soccer for the opportunity to represent a great nation and program who I have every confidence will return to the podium at Tokyo 2020.”
